Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church is a caring church family with a strong history of hospitality, fellowship, and care for each other. As we have embarked on our search for a full-time rector, we have spent several months listening carefully to each other, uncovering a multitude of ways we experience the presence of God in our lives.

We have reviewed our history, examined the present and prayed for the future for our common life in this place. This opportunity to uncover strengths and to own weaknesses has afforded us a stronger, more authentic view of what our church family is being called to do.

Saint Anne’s intentionally engaged in the process of learning how to better discuss differences among our church family. Our congregation is a blend of generations, of conservative and progressive values, and of high church and low church proponents. We are delighted to share this narrative profile of Trinity Episcopal Church with those discerning a call to serve as our 20th rector. To create it, we listened to parishioners, reviewed our history as well as considered our present, and reflected and prayed over hopes for Trinity’s future. We pray it is a true reflection of who we are as a Christian community that enjoys a unique blend of tradition and progression.

With each aspect of Trinity presented here, we include brief statements about what Trinity values, what Trinity envisions, and what Trinity hopes our next rector will bring as our pastor, leader, teacher, and energizer.

We are excited for our future. We give thanks for the ministry provided by Father T.J. Freeman over the past many years. His faith in God and his unwavering support has strengthened the parish in many ways. From capital improvements to the campus, encouraging and strengthening outreach programming, and protecting and enriching our Rite I and Rite II Sunday services, Trinity is in a strong position physically, liturgically and spiritually.

Truly, this is a great time to be at Trinity! It’s also a great time to live in Fort Wayne. Indiana’s second largest city is on the move — particularly with exciting downtown development driven by vision and investment. Trinity is proud to be one of the historic churches that stayed downtown; now we are enjoying the renaissance! We want to do so actively, growing our congregation as well as the impact of our ministries.

Every Sunday, during our 10:15am Rite II Prayers of the People, we pray: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries. As Trinity Episcopal Church—the first Christian church in Michigan City and the original seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana—marks its 190th year, we are celebrating with 190 Acts of Love. These Acts of Love include things like our Rainbow Coalition Fiber Arts Group, curbside hospitality during community events, and participating in Michigan City’s 190th anniversary bench art project.

Such acts reflect both our mission and our vision: By the Grace of Jesus Christ, we are called to worship God, to nurture in love, to connect in community, and serve in the world. Trinity Episcopal Church will be the light of Christ in our community.

These Acts of Love are performed against the backdrop of heartfelt, engaging worship and dedicated, faithful service which characterize our life together, no matter what year it is.

Trinity welcomes all in worship and community. Our Sunday services attract people who represent a range of ages, socio-economic status, race, gender identities, and sexual orientations. Our food pantry serves 18% of the population. Our buildings host a wide range of local non-profit organizations.

Michigan City, located on the shores of Lake Michigan, has a year-round population of 31,000-32,000. Trinity Episcopal Church is in the heart of Michigan City’s historic Uptown Arts district. While there are always things to do here, the city really comes alive in the summer months, when the beachfront invites us to play, festivals and events gather large crowds, and nearby Indiana Dunes National Park invites us to explore nature.

Standing tall on Liberty Mills Road, our sanctuary is a warm and welcoming place in the upscale subdivisions of Aboite Township in lovely southwest Fort Wayne. Grace is a place where everyone is welcome, hence our sign over the entry to the Nave—”We Are a House of Prayer for All Peoples.”

In interviews with visitors and new attendees, one thing always is mentioned: Grace’s welcoming atmosphere. We have continued to attract new members over the years. Many people report that they have tried out other churches but none have the same feeling of home that Grace has. That feeling of home is evident in the sign in our yard, the sign over the entry to the Nave, and the invitation for all who are seeking Christ to receive communion.

Our city is a prosperous community of about 400,000 souls and the second largest in Indiana. It is near the top of lists of best places to retire in the U.S. based on employment opportunities and the affordability of housing. Surrounded by an interstate ring it is easy to get places. Shopping, sports facilities, and recreation are convenient. Whether you’re looking to eat American, Indiana, Thai, Italian, healthy or not, Fort Wayne is also known for our variety of restaurants. From steakhouses and seafood to pizza and pubs, our city has a wide variety of places to eat. Grace is ideally located close to shopping, healthcare (Lutheran Hospital) and interstate access. While these are but a few of the many pluses of our location, what really sets Grace apart is the extraordinary welcoming tone and upbeat hands-on attitude of this remarkably capable community of faith that truly does show the unmerited love of God—GRACE—to all here.
